Chemical Peel

Chemical Peel

Aging is a fact of life. Looking your age is not.

Chemical peels have been around for decades – and for good reason! They work. In this treatment, an acid solution is applied to the face in order to safely and effectively remove the first, “damaged” layer of the skin. The chemical solution is intended to slough off the outermost layer of the skin to reveal fresher, brighter, more even-toned skin. A chemical peel targets pigmentation, blemishes, acne scars and more.

Our Approach:

Chemical peels should only be administered under the care of a highly trained professional given the varying strengths of the peels available. At Aesthetica, after a thorough consultation, our professionals will recommend which chemical peel is appropriate for you based on your skin type and aesthetic goals. We offer gentle peels for individuals seeking skin rejuvenation with little downtime and more aggressive peels for those seeking dramatic results. Chemical peels are typically performed in a series; however results can be seen after only one treatment.

How it Works

The face goes through a phase of natural exfoliation. However, exposure to everyday stress and harmful toxins in the environment could result in rapid dirt build up. At this point, the body’s natural healing process can’t keep up with the skin damage.

Chemical peels aid the body’s natural exfoliation process by using beneficial chemicals such as lactic, salicylic, glycolic, and retinoic acids to slough off dead matter. This reveals young, smooth, and vibrant skin underneath.

The Basics

If you’re new to chemical peels, here’s the basic concept: after cleansing your skin, an aesthetician or other medical professional will apply a specialized, acidic formula. After letting it work on your skin for a few minutes, it will be washed away. Over the following several days, your skin will look and feel like it’s sunburned before the damaged surface skin peels away. This reveals brighter, smoother, younger-looking skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and other surface imperfections.

Three Depths of Peels

Chemical peels can have any number of strength levels, but there are three basic categories: light, medium, and deep. Within these types are different approaches to chemical peels, and at Aesthetica MedSpa, we offer a variety that can be customized for your skin and goals.

Light Peels

Light Peels (or superficial chemical peels) can treat a number of skin issues including lines and wrinkles, acne, and scarring, and can improve skin texture. All chemical peels lighten the signs of sun damage and melasma by reducing pigmentation.

Light peels produce a minimal amount of peeling – in some cases, no visible peeling at all. They typically use alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like citric, glycolic, lactic, malic, or tartaric acids. Other light peels use beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acids. Any light peel will reduce fine lines, dryness, acne, and minor pigment irregularities. They’re particularly effective when patients receive a series of several peels and are often paired with microdermabrasion to optimize the results of radiant, younger-looking skin.

Medium Peels

Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin for more significant peeling and more dramatic results. They usually use trichloracetic acid (or TCA), although they can use different concentrations of TCA.

On top of the issues light peels can treat, medium peels address acne scars, advanced sun damage and pigment imperfections, and deeper wrinkles.

Deep Peels

Finally, deep peels are much more extensive procedures and deliver great results that are comparable to a facelift. They need to be performed by an experienced medical esthetician and require 1-2 weeks recovery time. When you come in for your consultation, your medical esthetician will work with you to determine the strength of peel needed to achieve your desired outcome.

Our Doctors Say...

Chemical peels can be highly potent and with that comes responsibility. Your medical provider should work with you one-on-one to determine how to adjust a peel accordingly to combat your skin challenge. We always like to over-educate our clients on what to expect post-peel day 1, day 2 and so on.

Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Chemical Peels Safe?

Yes, chemical peels are safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. It's important t0 meet with your dermatologist for a consultation before you get a chemical peel. Ask about their training in chemical peels and how often they do these treatments. You want to feel confident about the person you're entrusting with your skin.

Do Chemical Peels Work?

Absolutely! Did you know that chemical peels have been used since ancient times? It is said that Cleopatra applied sour milk containing lactic acid to her skin making her among the first to appreciate the benefits of chemical peels! And they still work pretty much the same way.

We add chemical solutions (such as salicylic acid, carbolic acid, or glycolic acid) to the skin, which damages the top layer(s) causing them to peel off. Underneath the peeled-away skin is a new and smoother skin layer!

How long will the results last?

A light chemical peel or glycolic peel will last 1 to 2 months. About 4 to 6 monthly treatments work well to maintain fine wrinkles, discoloration and photo damage, and once this series is over, maintenance or "lunchtime" peels can be scheduled as needed.

"Love! Had such a great experience getting lip fillers with Dr. Ibrahim at Aesthetica. The office is so beautiful and the staff/environment made it such a fun and inviting experience. I had a lot of questions and concerns when I went in for my consultation (it being my first experience) and Dr. Ibrahim took the time to thoroughly explain the process from start to finish. I felt so comfortable and at home throughout the entire procedure and I get constant compliments on the work she did for me. I can't wait to come back!"
