Microneedling
Good Skin is the Best Foundation for Makeup.
If you are interested in rejuvenating your entire face using a non-surgical tool, then Microneedling is a great alternative. Aesthetica utilizes SkinPen, the only FDA approved Microneedling pen, to reduce the signs of aging, improve the appearance of acne scars and revive aging skin. The Skinpen quickly creates “micro” skin punctures on the treatment area – the idea here is to execute a controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating micro injuries. This sounds much scarier than in it – in fact, this is very intuitive. Once the body’s natural wound healing process is complete, you are left with new dermal tissue and blood vessels. This specific treatment is especially recommended for patients suffering from acne scars. SkinPen is clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars for ages 22 and up.
Our Approach:
This is a fan favorite since SkinPen can be used on all types of skin and on all colors of skin. The procedure typically takes 30 minutes with a topical anesthetic applied to the skin prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort. Most patients will experience slight redness and swelling for 2-4 days. Typically, we recommend that patient receive a 3 treatment series, spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results.
How it Works
Microneedling’s promise to boost collagen production is achieved by triggering the body’s healing processes. A microneedling device uses dozens of sterile needles to superficially puncture the skin surface and activate healing.
Microneedling can also help break apart tough scar tissues, giving way for a smoother complexion. Different solutions can be introduced to the skin using a microneedling device, which delivers serums and acids straight to the skin for unparalleled absorption.
Aesthetica MedSpa utilizes SkinPen, the only FDA approved Microneedling pen, to reduce the signs of aging, improve the appearance of acne scars and revive aging skin.
Microneedling is a method to treat different skin conditions. The technique involves using multiple tiny, sterile needles to puncture the skin and cause physical trauma. This medically induced trauma prompts the derma, a deeper layer of skin, to rebuild.
Microneedling may help address many skin-related complaints, including wrinkles, scarring, alopecia, skin pigmentation issues, stretch marks, rosacea, loose skin, such as after weight loss or liposuction.
It may also help rejuvenate the skin.
Microneedling can be used to deposit medication, such as topical tretinoin or vitamin C, deeper into the skin. This can boost the treatment of a variety of issues, including acne scarring.

HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING WORK?
Microneedling increases the production of collagen and other healing factors by causing trauma to the skin.
Collagen is an essential protein that helps keep the skin looking youthful, with a firm, smooth, and stretchy texture.
Aging causes the decline of collagen in the skin, contributing to wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Skin can also lose collagen due to injuries, such as acne scarring, stretch marks, or other scars.
It is important to realize that microneedling is not a quick fix, as it involves the growth of new skin. It can take several months for a person to see the full results of the procedure.
BENEFITS
Microneedling is a safe and effective way to rejuvenate skin and treat scars and wrinkles. The American Academy of Dermatology states that people can expect a reduction in the “appearance of large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks”.
MICRONEEDLING + PRP
Microneedling treatments can also be combined with PRP to help boost results for an even more noticeable improvement in rejuvenation.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment entails drawing blood from the patient like a standard blood draw at the doctor’s office. This blood sample is then placed into a centrifuge which separates the plasma from the red and white blood cells. Plasma contains a high concentration of stem cells, platelets, and growth factors to help stimulate collagen and elastin production for youthful-looking skin.
Microneedling uses tiny needles to kick-start the skin’s wound-healing powers (thus unleashing a torrent of collagen and elastin production), while PRP uses a growth-activating serum and your body’s platelets to speed up cellular turnover. PRP can be applied to the skin following microneedling treatments to ensure that the PRP is fully absorbed.
When PRP is used along with microneedling, PRP supercharges the microneedling benefits for optimal rejuvenation. PRP can also help to address puffiness and dark circles under the eyes, so you can look as good as you feel. vPlus, because microneedling with PRP is minimally invasive, there is minimal recovery time needed. In fact, patients can usually return to work later that day.
Are you interested in rejuvenating your complexion, without the incisions, stitches, and downtime? If so, microneedling with PRP could be a good match for you.

Before & After
Frequently Asked Questions
RISKS
The medical community generally considers microneedling to be safe and effective, but there are still some risks.
The primary risk is mild skin irritation after the procedure. Other side effects could include:
- Swelling
- Discomfort at the site
- Redness
- Bruising
- Dryness
- Flaking of the skin
Who is a candidate for Microneedling?
Nearly anyone can be a good candidate for microneedling, because this procedure has very little to no drawbacks and is minimally invasive. With no wounding of the skin and minimal risks, microneedling therapy can be used on anyone who believes they need it. Doctors like to call microneedling therapy a color blind procedure, as it is effective on any kind of skin.
It is also incredibly affordable, as microneedle devices are much simpler than other more complex medical devices used for the skin.
What should I expect?
There are a few things you can expect after your first microneedling session, which can be done every 4-6 weeks. Here are some important things you should know:
- Your skin will return to normal after the inflammation for 1-2 days after the procedure.
- You can expect your skin to begin to peel up to 5 days after the treatment. Keep your skin moisturized and try to avoid .any intense activity that may cause sweating, as you do not want to open your pores. Avoid the sun for up to a week after the procedure.
- Do not take any inflammatory medication such as Advil or Ibuprofen after your procedure, and your body’s inflammation needs to naturally transform during this healing period.
- If you are experiencing too much skin discomfort, fresh pineapples can help with the pain.
- Results are guaranteed to show up. After your skin has recovered, you will be glowing in no time.
How long will the results last?
Unfortunately, microneedling results won’t last forever, so regular maintenance is advised. Doctors recommend that you have a microneedling treatment session at least once every quarter, or four times a year. This will ensure that you are looking fresh and glowing year-round.
So What Exactly is SkinPen?
Skin Pen is the first and only Class II microneedling medical device on the market that has been studied, cleared and approved by the FDA for treatment of adult facial acne scars. It is great to know Skin Pen has this level of proven effectiveness. However, Skin Pen works on more than just acne scars. Patients see significant improvement in overall skin tone and skin texture with the reduction of fine lines and discoloration as well. It even has shown some benefits in reducing stretch marks.
How does it work?
Skin Pen is a microneedling device that uses a sterile tip containing 12 pinpoint needles to make small controlled minuscule, evenly spaced punctures into the skin. The small wounds created, which sometimes will cause pinpricks of blood to rise to the surface, then induce a wound healing response. This is the key to how microneedling works. Your body rushes in to patch up the injury by growing fresh new collagen and elastin, which gives skin more strength and resiliency. By continuing to simulate collagen production over multiple treatments, the end result is patients will see fine lines and wrinkles disappear, enhanced improvement in skin tone and texture, and even reduction in large pores and acne scars. It’s also great for other skin surface irregularities like crepe skin and stretch marks. The bottom line is, as we age, we lose collagen (1% per year to be exact) and coupled with genetic changes and sun exposure this leads to wrinkles. If we can stimulate collagen production, we can fight off wrinkles and keep our skin firm, plump and elastic, to create what Skin Pen patients refer to as an “overall youthful glow.”
What to expect from the procedure?
Microneedling is a relatively short and painless in-office procedure. When a patient comes in for microneedling the first thing we do is apply numbing cream to the entire area being treated and let it sit for about 15 minutes. As soon as the patient’s skin is numb, we thoroughly cleanse the area and apply a hyaluronic acid-based gel to the skin, which allows the device to glide more easily over the surface. Also, the gel absorbs into the skin and contributes to faster wound healing and to the skin’s more plump appearance after the procedure. A full-face procedure takes about 20 minutes. The Skin Pen microneedling procedure involves three passes over the skin surface in first a horizontal direction, then vertical, and the final pass is performed in a circular motion. Although there may be pinpoint bleeding during the procedure, this is typically minimal and resolves quickly. A layer of hyaluronic acid-based gel is placed over the entire face and the patient is given a supply to continue to apply over the next 24 hours. This will keep the skin moist. The patient will notice redness immediately after the procedure and a slight “sunburn” look that will typically appear the following day. By the second day most redness and peeling is finished and the patient is able to start wearing makeup again (with sunscreen of course), as the fresh healing skin will be more sensitive to sunlight.
When do you see results?
Although many patients do see improvement immediately after the procedure, the full results won’t be visible for up to 4 weeks and will continue improving for up to 6 months. Most patients will complete a series of 3-4 treatments spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. Medical studies have shown that patients see a 45-55% overall improvement in skin. Patients notice that their skin feels and looks smoother. There is also a reduction in fine lines and skin crepiness and patients can see improvement in acne scars, brown spots, and stretch marks, too. Most patients say their overall skin tone and skin texture is noticeably improved.
Are there any risks associated with microneedling?
Like any other medical procedure, there is some risk involved, although microneedling, having been done for many years, appears to have a relatively safe track record with very few adverse effects. Although a numbing cream is used prior to the procedure, some patients will experience minor pain or discomfort during the procedure and a “sunburn” sensation for a day or two afterwards. It is very important that patients follow instructions on skin care after the procedure to prevent infection. The needle holes produced are pinpoint and heal quickly but if not cared for properly can be a potential portal of entry for bacteria. Discoloration can occur temporarily after the procedure, more commonly seen in darker colored skin but typically is temporary and resolves quickly. As microneedling evolves, different substances have been used during the procedure to enhance results, however since absorption is so much greater, there is a potential for allergic or irritant reactions although these appear to be relatively rare. Clinical trials have shown that 90% of Skin Pen patients were happy with their results and would recommend it to their family and friends. This speaks volumes to the safety record of this particular device and why patients who do their research, ultimately chose Skin Pen.
Can microneedling be combined with other procedures?
Absolutely, yes! We recommend that patients come in for a complete skin exam and evaluation to first see if microneedling is right for them and what other procedures may be beneficial to enhance a more youthful appearance. While microneedling can improve overall skin tone and texture and diminish fine lines and acne scars, it cannot fill in or smooth out deep lines or crevices.
At Aesthetica Med Spa, we talk about the 5 R’s to facial rejuvenation: Remove, Redirect, Replenish, Revitalize and Resurface.
Non-surgical procedures such as laser hair removal can remove excess facial hair, immobilizers like Botox and Dysport can redirect muscle movement, fillers like Restylane and Juvederm can replenish areas that have lost volume and procedures like microneedling and chemical peels can revitalize the skin.
Lasers, like Fraxel and Ultrapulse CO2, resurface deep wrinkles in the skin, but these procedures also require several days of downtime and recovery.
We use the various methods based on the needs of the patient to give them a more youthful rejuvenated appearance, and most importantly, we are able to do so without having to undergo surgery.
