Professional Microneedling vs. Dermarolling – Are They The Same?

Both treatments boast similar results – collagen induction and a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles and dullness, but what gives? Are they really similar? Read below to find out!

Where Can You Receive Treatments?

Microneedling is performed under a licensed physician’s care, whereas the Dermaroller is marketed as an “at-home” treatment. Prior to a Microneedling treatment, the patient meets one-on-one with a professional for a full consultation to explain skin history and desired results. Dermaroller, on the other hand, offers no pre or post-treatment care. Should there be resulting erythema or edema following a Dermarolling treatment, there is no follow-up care available.

Functionality of the Tools

The basic principal behind both procedures is the same. Tiny needles are used to create controlled, micro injuries to the skin. This in turn stimulates the skin’s natural healing process to encourage remodeling of the skin. What sets them apart, however, is the depth and control. At Aesthetica, we utilize SkinPen® for our Microneedling treatments. SkinPen® is the only legally marketed and Class II, FDA cleared Microneedling device in the US. With a SkinPen® , a medical professional can control the depth of the needles to not only each patient, but also for the various areas of the same patient’s face. Depending on the desired results and skin type, depth of the needles need customization in order to safely and effectively carry out the procedure. In contrast, the Dermaroller offers only one setting which can cause extreme irritation to the skin and can result in tearing or scarring.

Any Other Concerns?

The Dermaroller is a one-piece system and therefore raises sanitary concerns. If a roller is not properly cleaned before the next use, it can cause the spread of bacteria. With a SkinPen® , the “head” and enclosed needled are disposables (a new set for each patient) thus creating a sterile environment.
